Laser Tattoo Removal has evolved considerably since it’s inception. Laser Removal is a non-invasive procedure that can lighten and remove tattoos over a number of sessions.
The sensation is commonly described as slightly less painful or similar to getting a tattoo, and like a tattoo it varies depending on the location of the work. Laser technicians at Urge use the latest Quanta Q plus C and Smart Cool 6 Chiller.
How it Works
Lasers are used to destroy the pigments in the tattoo. Tattoo ink is a colored liquid and when the laser attracts to the color it crystallizes the ink making it a hard substance. The body recognizes this crystal as a foreign object and either digests (metabolizes) it or pushes it out through the skins surface, much like a splinter. At the same time trying to keep scarring to a minimum.
The pricing ranges from $100 (a small tattoo) per session to $200 for a larger tattoo and longer sitting. Laser removal machines are very expensive so our pricing reflects the wear and tare on the machine, per pulse. The usual price ranges from $100 to a maximum of $300, a quote can be provided to you ahead of your booking if you would like to visit us for a consultation.

The Laser Tattoo Removal Process
A tattoo is a permanent mark or design made on the body when pigment is inserted into the dermal layer of the skin through ruptures in the skin’s top layer. Modern-day tattoos are applied by using an electric tattoo machine with needles that rapidly puncture the skin with an up and down motion not unlike that of a sewing machine.
Lasers are used to destroy the pigments in the tattoo. Tattoo ink is a colored liquid and when the laser attracts to the color it crystallizes the ink…making it a hard substance. The body recognizes this crystal as a foreign object and either digests (metabolizes) it or pushes it out through the skins surface, much like a splinter. At the same time trying to keep scarring to a minimum.
The surface of the skin is “transparent” to the laser beam while the heat of the laser focuses at the precise level of the pigment. The pigment chars and breaks down into small particles that are removed by the body’s immune system.
Before lasers became popular for tattoo removal starting in the late 1980s, removal involved the use of one or more of these often-painful, often scar-inducing surgeries:
Although the procedures above are still used in certain cases today, lasers have become the standard treatment for tattoo removal because they offer a bloodless, low risk, effective alternative with minimal side effects.
About Laser Tattoo Removal in Victoria, BC
Does it hurt?
The heat produced by the laser procedure is localized to a very small area but it can cause some brief discomfort. For those with sensitive skin, a topical anesthetic can be used. We use a chiller that cools the skin by blowing -35 degree cold air onto the treatment area. This reduces the discomfort of tattoo removal quite significantly.
How effective is laser tattoo removal?
Laser treatment is very effective on most types of tattoos and most colors. Generally, tattoos can be totally eliminated by laser treatment, resulting in no residual dyes or scarring. Laser tattoo removal is a new science and the latest models of lasers are more effective than earlier models. The methodology is not simple. Different frequencies must be used for different colors of tattoo ink. It is crucial that the laser tattoo removal procedure be performed by an experienced operator who has received specialized training for this procedure.
Are there any side effects of laser tattoo removal?
After the laser procedure you may experience some redness, swelling and scabbing and sometimes blistering. This is a normal process as the body works to eliminate the tattoo dyes. As new layers of skin grow, the old tattoo is pushed towards the surface. It will eventually form a scab and then disappear, leaving fresh new skin with no tattoo dyes.
How many treatments are usually required?
It generally takes between 6 – 12 laser treatments to completely remove a tattoo, depending on the kind and color of ink used, the client’s immune system, the size and location of the tattoo and whether it was applied by a professional or an amateur. Older and homemade tattoos can take between 1-3 treatments to completely remove the ink.
What about the sun?
We will not be able to perform any tattoo removal procedures on freshly tanned skin due to possible hypo-pigmentation complications. You must keep your tattoo out of the sun 2 weeks before any treatment and also keep it completely covered from the sun after treatment.
Can you just take one bit of the tattoo off?
Absolutely; regretting having a certain name on a certain heart scroll? No problem we can take out just the name leaving a blank canvas!
How often can I get a treatment?
Depending on the individual we always leave 6-8 weeks between each treatment, this allows your body to break everything down completely and reduces the number of treatments you will need.
